Educators Go to Washington
14July08

Several local members of the South Carolina Education Association (SCEA) recently attended the 2008 National Education Association Representative Assembly (RA) in Washington D.C.  The SCEA membership elected these delegates last spring to represent South Carolina’s public school children at the NEA’s national convention.  Delegates spent the week starting each day at 7:00am with South Carolina Caucus meetings.  These meetings allowed delegates time to debate important NEA constitutional amendments, new business items, and resolutions with other South Carolina delegates and vote on South Carolina’s position on these issues.  During the NEA Convention’s RA, each delegate had the opportunity to debate the issues and cast votes that will steer the course of the NEA for the 2008-2009 school year.

The CSRA was fortunate to have several local delegates in attendance.  Among them were Fox Creek High School Principal, Dr. Tim Murph; Wagner-Salley Science Teacher, Ms. Mary Mason; and Aiken County Education Association (ACEA) President and Aiken High School Teacher, Ms. Amy Harrison.

Fox Creek’s Principal, Dr. Tim Murph, was elected to serve as South Carolina’s supervisory delegate.  Dr. Murph explained, “As an educator, it is satisfying to know that our local communities were represented at the NEA Representative Assembly and played an important role in determining the NEA’s direction for the coming years.  I thank our educators and educational leaders for their support and for all that they do for our communities’ children.”  ACEA President, Ms. Amy Harrison, expressed jubilation when describing the event.  "This was my first RA and WOW!  It's been a lot to absorb: informative, thrilling, and energizing all in one.  Thank you Aiken County for this opportunity.”

SCEA President, Ms. Shelia Gallagher, has recently appointed Dr. Murph and three other SCEA members including Horry County Education Association President, Ms. Debbie Tucker, to attend the NEA’s Republican Leaders Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  The conference is in conjunction with the GOP National Convention.  Only 4 representatives from each state are invited to attend.  Dr. Murph described the appointment as “humbling”.  “I appreciate President Gallagher’s confidence in me and I look forward to the opportunity of continuing to represent the children of this great state.”
