School Notes

The Academic Academy and the STAR Program for 2007-2008 classes:

  • Tuesday:        3:15 pm - 4:15 pm, Room 133, Math with Mr. Chmielowiec and "STAR"

  • Thursday:       3:15 pm - 4:15 pm, Room 133, English with Mr. Mitchell and "STAR"

The Academic Academy will be open to ALL students that are seeking assistance (in all areas of study).  Students are encouraged to take advantage of these new courses.  Tardiness to sporting events or other extracurricular activities as a result of these classes will be forgiven (without penalty).

A Student Attendance Recovery Program, "STAR", is being offered Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:15 pm to 4:15 pm.  One afternoon is the equivalent of one class period and seven (7) afternoons is the equivalent of one school day.  Don’t fail based on days, make up missed attendance days after school with the STAR Program

  • ATTENTION COLLEGE BOUND STUDENTS AND PARENTS:

    • SAT/ACT: Any Junior who would like to take the SAT or ACT this Spring,  please see Ms. Key for a fee waiver.
                  SAT: March 1, May 3, or June7                 ACT: April 12 or June 14

    • Any students who have registered to take the SAT on www.collegeboard.com should make sure they take advantage of the site's SAT preparation information.  Once a student has created an account he/she can download and print out a complete SAT practice test at no charge.  It is strongly encouraged that students complete this practice test and use the online feature to review their answers.  The site will allow the student to download the correct answers as well as provide explanations for those answers.

    • Free SAT online preparation course is available through the State Dept. of Education.  Students can also earn high school credit for completion of the course.  Please see Ms. Key to sign up, some restrictions apply.  (9-6-07)

    • South Carolina Commission on Higher Education (www.che.sc.gov) offers tons of information about grants, scholarships, college admissions, etc.

    • All students planning to attend college starting Fall 2008, or beyond, should visit www.collegeboard.com and start working on the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE beginning October 1, 2007.  Colleges and universities use the information on the PROFILE to help them award private grants and scholarships.

  • The Academic Common Market, which is administered by the Southern Regional Education Board, allows for South Carolina residents who are enrolled in specific programs at public out-of-state institutions to be charged only the applicable in-state tuition by the institution in which the student is enrolled.  Eligible programs are those programs, which are at least 50% different in curricular content than programs in South Carolina.  Participating states are Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.  Please visit http://www.che.sc.gov/AcademicAffairs/ACM_Information.htm, http://www.SREB.org for more information, or speak with Ms. Key for more details.

  • Create Your Own Scholarship: 
    How could your students help others?  Starting October 15th, student can submit their own idea for a scholarship and FastWeb will pay for it.  Starting November 5th students can vote for their favorite scholarship idea.  The winner will receive a $4,000 scholarship for themselves and a $4,000 scholarship to give away.  For more information and to enter ideas, see http://www.fastweb.com/sp/HSMICB.

  • NBC Augusta wants to spotlight Fox Creek High School on the air and on their website.  In order to be successful they want to turn our students into journalists.  Students please go to http://www.nbcaugusta.com/younews where they can upload photos and movies about the positive events happening at the school.  All the content will be checked out by their editors before it is posted or shown live on their newscasts.  Each year NBC Augusta will award four $500 college scholarships to the students who capture the most interesting pictures or video.  Please speak to Ms. Key for any additional information.

  • Internship Opportunities!!  Any 11th or 12th grader interested in a Management, Marketing, Accounting/Finance, Operations, or Leasing Internship with the Augusta Mall, please see Ms. Key or visit www.ggpprodigies.com for an application and more information.

  • Discover Scholarship Program - awards up to ten (10) $30,000 scholarships.

    Qualification:  any current high school junior that has at least a 2.75 GPA and demonstrates accomplishments in community service and leadership and has faced a significant roadblock or challenge.  Scholarships may be used for any type of post-high school education or training, certification, licensing, two- or four-year trade and technical education or a two- or four-year college degree.  To apply online, visit www.scholarshipadministrators.net and use access key "DISC".  You may also download and print a 2008 Discover Scholarship application.  The application deadline for the 2008 program is a postmark date of Jan. 31, 2008.  Online applications must be submitted by 11:59 PM EST January 31, 2008.

Students can sign up for the SAT at www.collegeboard.com.  The students can pick any test location they would like, the website lists all testing locations in South Carolina and Georgia.  It does not matter where the student takes the SAT.  The CEEB code for FCHS is 411514; use this code so that scores are sent to FCHS.
